Well, it started out to be promising and brilliant game, something it managed to deliver. Typical stuff from DICE, never fails. Nice work.
We all should know by now what the game is about and how it plays, but for those in the cheap seats and have’nt taken the plunge yet…
It’s both a single player and (brilliant) multiplayer. The single player element puts you into a small military unit, one that seems to find humour and bullets at every turn.
But after a surprise discovery, (lots of gold) your squad decide to do things their own way.
You fight in a destructible environment, in helicopters, tanks, and the odd emplaced heavy duty guns.
You’ll be challenged on the later levels, and on the higher level game modes, (covering beginner to expert) and it’s actually not a bad experience to play the single player too, not that I play it that much.
The real meat of the game lies in the multiplayer mode, and this is where it gets tastey too. You’ll automagically be put into squads of four, and teams of 12v12. Even though it’s nine months old, it’s still easy to find severs filling up pretty damned fast.
As a beginner coming into the game now, you’ll certainly struggle to find your place, but dont worry, you’ll catch on pretty quickly, just learn the maps, and stick with one type of class, go for support, its good all round and has mortar strikes, good for taking out lots of enemies without getting near.
As for the more seasoned veterans, we all know the score, 5 snipers all sitting on a hill while you and one other person is attacking. We know there are some amazing chopper pilots out there, and some are in here too, Sy, bluey, astro, me (modesty i know
) and we can rule the game, and change the entire structure of the defence’s team, and change the look of the buildings while we’re at it. (It does have destructible environments like I said). But dogtag stealing is a must. Get the hang of it now.
There are two game modes for multiplayer, there’s Gold Rush and CTF capture the flag aka Conquest.
Gold rush is all I play, and for some reason, even though I’m damned good at this game, I get my arse kicked all over the map in conquest.
GR see you attacking, and you have to destroy the gold crates, 2 of per map section. Some maps have 3sections, some have a lot more, while you’re attacking, there are of course, some defenders who want the gold for themselves, after all, who does’nt want a trip to Hawaii for free?
You’ll have at your disposal, tanks, hummers, choppers, boats, a Howitzer, and fast attack vehicles. You’ll need ‘em all.
With a good squad/team you should get the first gold crates without a huge amount of trouble, and if your team is on the ball and fast, you’ll get the second set even faster.
How to destroy the crates? There are 2 ways, blast the living hell out of them, using C4, anti tank mines, RPG’s, and even standard bullets will do it, the other way is to plant a charge on them by pressing the circle button.Planting a charge means getting up close and personal, then defending the crate while the enemy come to defuse your charge. Best bet, is to stay back a bit and blast anyone who gets near it.
Defenders, your job is to stop them any way you can. A lot of teams make the mistake of getting cocky and will run to intercept the attackers and leave the base undefended. You wont believe how many time’s i’ve seen this, and how many time’s i’ve been the ONLY defender. Let me tell you, if that happens, it’s game over very quickly.
Stand and wait for them to come to you, they have NO choice, they have to attack to win, you have to stop them to win.
Here’s a couple of HD video’s from actual gameplay:
OK, 9 months on.
Well, it’s had some problems, and some very controversial problems too.
Firstly patches, and the controversy, because the Xbox 360 has limited storage in its default state, DICE can only create so many and limited size patches, and because they are loathe to patch one and not the other system, after all they dont want to be showing the public how weak the xbox is in this area, they refuse to patch the ps3 version, leaving us vets with an incomplete and often buggy game.
There are some serious issues with carshing and locking up of the game, forcing you to do a hard reset of the ps3.
Another is friends, ie, inviting friends into a game so you can play together is very hit and miss, well, mostly miss.
There is also a problem with 5.1 surround sound, sometimes it distorts in the rear speakers, sometimes it goes completely silent, and you have to cold start your amp.
Also, there is a pretty serious glich that lets CHEATS use the howitzer to constantly bombard the enemy, if this happens, then a team kill is more than acceptable. If you are on the other side, destroy the gun, kill the player, and camp to make sure they dont use it after it respawns. If you cant manage it, and it can be hard work to do it, leave the server, and maybe write a report to sony. They might get a ban, or maybe get their stats reset, or maybe nothing at all.
Lastly, for the trophy whores, forget it, you will not get them all, yep, i’ts another bug, some you just dont recieve even after acheiving the goals, making it impossible to get a platinum.
Overall, i have to say, it’s the only game that keeps me coming back time after time, after time, and I’m not the only one, even after buying dozens of other games, even after the disapointing launch of Killzone 2, I still keep playing. Why? Meet me on the battlefield, and I’ll show you why.
OH CRAP!!!!
